Boat Race

Annual Coble Boat Race

The Newburgh Coble boat race has been an important local event since the first recorded race in 1880. In the past most of the local boys would work on the salmon net fishing, learning to row the 18 foot salmon coble with the result that this annual race was battled out between local youths and men who were excellent oarsmen.

Since the end of the netting in 1996 the people of Newburgh are determined to keep the tradition going and the boat race remains a significant event in the community. During the weeks leading up to the race the boats are back on the Tay giving the next generation a chance to learn to row and prepare for the race.
