Newburgh Coble Boat Race Winners 2010

Friday, August 20th, 2010

The men’s final was won by Gavin and Graham Marshall. The women’s race was won by Jenna Marshall and Kayleigh Watters. The under 18’s event was won by Scott Loosemore and Callum Smart. See the Gallery page for pictures of this year’s race and the winners and the presentation of the prizes.

The Coble Boat Race and Heritage day was a huge success with a particularly large crowd of spectators this year. This included many visitors from outwith the town. There was a Canadian man visiting who enjoyed the event so much that he took part in the men’s race. The committee now have a list of people interested in forming a Newburgh Rowing Club so we’ll discuss how to take this forwards, along with plan’s for next year’s events, at our next meeting. Anyone wanting to help out or contribute new ideas please contact the committee.

No ‘Reaper’ but Race and Heritage day still on

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

Robertson’s Quay and the salmon fishing net green are all set up for the day’s entertainment with music, food, beer tent and lots of trade stands. The Reaper set off from Anstruther as planned yesterday afternoon but the engine failed when it was 2 miles out to sea. The boat drifted for half an hour before being towed back to Anstruther. An engineer from Rosyth spent a few hours trying to make repairs btu without success. The Reaper will be towed to Arbroath next week for the repairs.

Despite that disappointment, the rest of the day’s events are still running as planned with the main event, the Newburgh Coble Boat Race starting sometime between 4 and 5pm. Anyone still wanting to row in this years race should register at the committee tent, just opposite the slipway, by 4pm at the latest.

The ‘Reaper’ will sail from Anstruther on the afternoon of the 13th, arriving to dock at Robertson’s Pier at approximately 6pm. All the tickets are now sold out for the boat trip to accompany the ‘Reaper’ but there will be plenty of opportunities for boat trips the next day.

Visitors to Newburgh for the Coble Boat Race and Heritage Day can park at the top of the public park (Tayside Park). Other parking is available at West Shore Road which is the better choice for wheelchair users. Programes for the days events will be on sale for £1.

There will be various stands for entertainments and local organisations. Refreshments are available at our ‘beer tent’ and ‘food tent’.

One of the aims of the day is to secure the future of this unique Coble Boat Race, so please look out for the games committee tent where you can register you interest in forming a Newburgh Rowing club.
